Biosafety Issues and Activities in Kenya: Role of the Division of Food Safety and Quality Control

Biosafety is a concept that refers to measures put in place to mitigate or protect human health and the environment from possible adverse effects of the products of modern biotechnology. Kenya was the first country globally to sign the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety in 2000 and concluded the ratification process in 2003. The objective of this Protocol is to contribute to ensuring an adequate level of protection in the field of safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology. The division of Food Safety and Quality Control is one of the regulatory agencies designated in the Biosafety Act 2009.  The division is mandated to ensure safety of food meant for human consumption and protection of the consumer against food borne diseases/illnesses
