The Role of the Board

The Board is the national competent authority on matters of radiation safety, security of radioactive and nuclear materials, control of contamination of food and environment with radioactivity and other related matters.

It also collaborates with International Atomic Energy Agency on matters of radiation protection and nuclear safety on behalf of the Government.

The board comprises of the following divisions:

1. Licensing:

  • Processes licenses for radiation workers, radiation facilities;
  • Evaluate and recommend license application to the Board;
  • Carrying out inspections of all radiation facilities and workers country wide; and
  • Evaluation of the safety status of a given radiation facility.

2. Compliance:

  • It institutes proceedings in a court of law in respect of an offence under the Radiation Protection Act or any regulations made thereafter;
  • Policy formulation drafting and review of legislation and standards enforcement
  • Adopting mechanisms to enforce the act

3. Nuclear Security:

  • Formulation of radioactive waste management policy and guidelines;
  • Works with the Licensing division on license applications of radioactive waste operators;
  • Co-ordinate safe transportation of radioactive materials;
  • Co-ordinates disposal activities for radioactive waste; and
  • Working with the governmental security agents in combating illicit trafficking of nuclear materials.

4. National Radiation Protection Laboratory:

  • Certifying radioactivity levels in in food and the environment;
  • Co-ordinate activities in radioanalytical services;
  • Monitoring of monthly radiation absorbed doses for personnel working at radiation facilities;
  • Carrying out research and development on radiation protection; and
  • Calibration of radiation devices and nuclear instrumentation

Projects/Events

The events/projects undertaken by the Board:

  • Hosted an International Atomic energy Agency(IAEA ) training on Regulatory Authority Information Systems for Board's staff on 11th – 15 August, 2008;
  • Hosted an IAEA regional training at Mombasa on Illicit Trafficking Information Management and Coordination on 7th-11th July, 2008; and
  • IAEA project on Licensing of Radioactive Waste Management;

Ongoing IAEA Projects coordinated by the Board:

  • Nuclear security and Implementation;
  • Development of Technical Capabilities for Sustainable Radiation and Waste Safety;
  • Strengthening National Regulatory Infrastructure for the Control of Radiation Sources;
  • Development of Technical Capabilities for Protection of Health and Safety Workers Exposed to Ionizing Radiation;
  • Strengthening Radiological Protection of Patients and Medical Exposure Control;
  • Establishment of National Capabilities for Response to a Radiological and Nuclear Emergency; and
  • Strengthening National Infrastructure for the Control of Public Safety in the Management of Radioactive waste.
