Mission: To be a leader in providing health services and facilities related to the transportation of Cargo and Passengers by Air, Water and Land at the entry and/or exit points of the Republic of Kenya

Vision: Provide comprehensive Port Health Services to all clients within the provisions of the International Health Regulations (2005) and other existing relevant Health Laws

Core Functions:

  1. Implementation of the International Health Regulations
  2. Disease surveillance within the ports and frontier post of entry and exit
  3. Quarantine administration
  4. Inspection and certification of vessels (aircraft, ship, train or road vehicle)
  5. Environmental Sanitation within ports and frontier posts to control nuisances such as noise, dust , smoke and odour problems
  6. Vector/vermin control within and around ports and frontiers
  7. Food safety measures for both imports and exports
  8. Vaccination of travellers and issuance of vaccination certificates
  9. Respond to any health emergencies within and around the port area
  10. Scrutinise plans and documentation regarding improvement of port area for approval
  11. Liaise with other stakeholders in implementation of port health activities
  12. Revenue collection for chargeable services

Major Activities

(a) Past and Current Activities

  1. Screening of passengers from countries affected by internationally notifiable diseases and taking appropriate action as necessary
  2. Investigation of any case of infectious diseases report at the port or aboard any vessel (aircraft, ship, train or road vehicle) entering the country
  3. Notification of any diseases as per IHR (2005)
  4. Quarantine of passenger(s) suspected of having an infectious disease
  5. Fumigation of infected vessels and quarantine as need arises
  6. Quarantine any vessel disinfected or disinfested as per IHR (2005) and other existing local laws and regulations
  7. Inspect all types of commercial vessels to ensure appropriate sanitary conditions and hygiene standards are maintained
  8. Review of documents on Maritime Declaration of Health
  9. Issuance of Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificate/Ship Sanitation Control Certificate
  10. Mosquito control
  11. Control of scavengers
  12. Control of other vectors and vermins
  13. Inspection of food conveyance vessels to ensure that food is transported in hygienic environment
  14. Inspection (including sampling and testing) and certification of food imports in accordance with both international and local food safety laws and regulations
  15. Inspections of food manufacturing, processing and catering establishments within ports.

(b) Upcoming activities

  1. Integration of Port Health Services with other services offered by various departments at the ports of entry through electronic networking
  2. Modernization of port Health Services through computerization of all services offered.
